The Japan Consortium for Open Access Repositories (JPCOAR) developed the JPCOAR schema in 2017 as a standard for metadata distribution in institutional repositories and has since made two minor revisions in response to changes in the distribution of scholarly information in Japan and abroad.
Just as the Cabinet Office has published the 'Common Metadata Elements' , more specific actions are now required for research data that provide evidence for academic outputs. Furthermore, in order to handle digital archives of historically and culturally valuable information resources owned by academic institutions, a Metadata WG was set up under a joint committee of the National Institute of Informatics, the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the National Diet Library, and it has been reviewing the issue in cooperation with relevant communities.
Following these discussions, the JPCOAR Schema Version 2.0 was launched on 21 December 2022.
